POLAR TOURISM GUIDE ASSOCIATION (PTGA) ASSESSMENTS

The Polar Tourism Guide Association (PTGA) is the industry standard for assessing skills specifically for expedition guiding. At the International Guiding Institute we pride ourselves on exceeding PTGA standards for the skills that we teach, thus after completing our courses, you will be ready for the assessment.

The assessments need to be completed after you have finished your training. If you are already an experienced guide and only require the assessments, you are welcome to join us on the assessment days.

Having a PTGA qualification, while not mandatory, is looked on particularly favourably in the industry and will increase your chances of securing work. Some companies also increase your salary once you have attained your Polar Guide status. We do recommend that students on our Complete Expedition Guide course stay for the extra two days and complete as many of the assessments as they can.

Please note: For your PTGA assessments to be recognised you will need to register with the PTGA and pay applicable registration and/or associated fees directly to the PTGA. Click here

The following PTGA assessments will be offered:

  1. Communication skills (Radio and satellite phone communications)
  2. Navigation skills
  3. Working with Small Boats/Zodiacs
  4. Driving Small Boats/Zodiacs
